Since the 1980's the most popular surfboard design has been the shortboard. However, surfboards come in a wide array of designs and hybrid designs, all of which enjoy their own popularity among surfers. The major design groups and their general traits are as follows:
Fish:
Short, wide, with flat rocker in the entry and tail. Fish boards allow the board to plane at a lower speeed, with tight turning radius, better suited to small waves, good for intermediate to advanced surfers.Eggs
: Similar to Fishes but with a flatter rocker and added curve in the outline. They plane quickly, easily catching waves. Usually shorter than 6 feet, suited for small surf, best for intermediate to advanced surfers.
Shortboards:
Basic shortboard has a single to double concave and three fins. A thinned-down design that lacks flotation and offers poor paddling ability, can be difficult for the novice, and difficult in weak or small surf. Shortboards are designed for intermediate and advanced surfers only.
Retro Single Fins:
Historical design, a throwback to original surfboards with one fin instead of two or three. Higher volume under where the surfer's chest lays, allowing easy paddling and easy ability to catch waves. Can cause easy "spin-out", however because of easy of paddling and catching waves, good for beginners or advanced either one.
Funboards:
Self-explanatory, designed for fun with ample volume and greater length, allowing easy paddling, catching waves, and turning. Funboards have a very elongated egg shape. Good in small to medium surf, very bad in large surf. Best suited for beginners.
Mini Tanker:
Smaller version of the longboard, for small to medium waves, best suited to weight and body size of females and children. Good for surfers of any level.
Longboards
: Also self-explanatory, can be over nine feet long, catching any wave with ease, an aid to learning. Because of the length, width, and thickness of the longboard, they're often referred to as "tankers". Best beginner board available, good for any skill level, requires strength and good technique to perform well.
Semi-guns
: Also called "mini-guns", they are sleek, elegent, and meant for medium to large surf. Variations in design are surf-spot specific and rider specific.Semi-guns are for advanced to expert level surfer.
Guns:
For the serious surfer, designed for riding largest waves of the year. Only for the best of the best on the biggest waves. |
